RIA Marketing

Growth That Does Not Depend on Somebody Else's Referral.

Most RIAs were built entirely on referrals, and most RIAs are now discovering that referrals do not scale, do not replace a retiring client base, and do not reach the next generation of investable assets.

We market registered investment advisors with the SEC Marketing Rule in the room from the first draft, not bolted on at review. That means content built to be defensible, no testimonial exposure you did not choose, and a growth channel your compliance officer can actually approve.

A prospect with a liquidity event is researching for months before anyone gets a call. Every one of those searches is a chance to be the firm that already answered the question.

Key Takeaways

  • Built with the SEC Marketing Rule considered from the first draft, not discovered at compliance review.
  • No testimonial or endorsement exposure you did not deliberately choose and disclose.
  • AI search visibility, which matters unusually here because assistants are now the first stop for "how do I find a fiduciary advisor" research.
  • Content built for your actual niche, whether that is business owners, physicians, retirees, or inherited wealth.
  • A pipeline you own, alongside the referral network you already have.
  • Reporting your compliance officer and your partners can both read.
The Real Problem

Why RIA Marketing Usually Stalls

Compliance kills it slowly. Not by saying no, but by making every piece expensive to approve. Marketing gets drafted by someone who does not know the rule, sent to compliance, rewritten, sent back, and eventually abandoned. The firm concludes marketing does not work for RIAs. What actually failed was the process.

The website says nothing. Independent, fiduciary, client-first, comprehensive planning. Every RIA site in the country says exactly this, which means none of them differentiate. A prospect comparing three firms cannot tell them apart, so they default to whichever one a friend named.

Referrals are treated as a strategy rather than a result. Referrals are excellent and they are not a growth plan. They arrive on someone else's schedule, they skew toward the age of your existing book, and they cannot be increased on demand.

Meanwhile the search behavior underneath all of this has changed. Prospects with real assets are asking an AI assistant what to look for in an advisor, and getting a synthesized answer that names specific firms. Being absent from that answer is a new and quiet form of invisibility.

On the Marketing Rule: we are a marketing agency, not a compliance firm, and nothing here is legal or compliance advice. What we do is build content that anticipates the rule, keeps testimonial and endorsement exposure deliberate, avoids performance and result claims that create obligations, and arrives at your CCO in a state they can approve rather than rebuild.
What We Do

What RIA Marketing Includes

Every engagement includes strategy, reporting, and AI visibility monitoring. We do not withhold those at lower tiers, because an advisory firm evaluating a vendor deserves to see the same transparency it gives its own clients.

01

Positioning and Niche Definition

The single highest-leverage work for most RIAs. A firm that serves everyone competes with everyone. We define who you are genuinely best for and rebuild the message around that, which makes every channel afterward cheaper.

02

Compliance Aware Content

Educational content, planning explainers, and niche-specific writing drafted with the Marketing Rule in view. Testimonials and endorsements handled deliberately, with disclosure, or not used at all.

03

Search and AI Visibility

Technical SEO, entity clarity, and structured content so both Google and AI assistants can find your firm and describe it accurately. Here is what AI search optimization means in practice. Advisor search is high consideration and low volume, which makes accuracy of description matter more than raw traffic.

04

Website That Differentiates

Most RIA sites are indistinguishable. We rebuild yours around your niche, your process, and your people, with the disclosures and Form ADV access handled properly. See how we approach RIA websites.

05

Referral Network Amplification

Your COI relationships with CPAs and attorneys are an asset. We build the content and materials that make you easy for them to refer and easy for a referred prospect to verify online.

06

Reporting and Attribution

Where prospects come from, what they read before reaching out, and which content produces qualified conversations. Monthly, with a strategy call.

Who This Is For

Firms We Fit

We work with a small number of advisory firms. We are a fit for firms that want a defined niche and are willing to say no to prospects outside it. We are a poor fit for firms that want volume-driven lead generation.

  • Independent RIAs that have grown on referrals and hit the ceiling that comes with it.
  • Breakaway advisors building a brand from scratch after leaving a wirehouse or a broker-dealer.
  • Firms with a real niche, business owners, physicians, executives, or inherited wealth, that has never been reflected in their marketing.
  • Multi-advisor practices where growth currently depends on one rainmaker's personal network.
  • Firms preparing for succession that need enterprise value independent of a single advisor's relationships.
Real Results

The AI Channel Is Already Producing

In an advisory client's own GA4, we found an AI Assistant traffic channel outperforming both direct and paid search on key event rate. Not a projection or an industry forecast. First-party data from a real advisory firm.

1stAI Assistant channel by key event rate
> DirectOutperformed direct traffic
> PaidOutperformed paid search
GA4Measured in the client's own analytics, not modeled

Traffic arriving from an AI assistant is small in volume and unusually well qualified, because the assistant has already answered the basic questions and filtered the people who were never going to engage. For an advisory firm where one right client changes the year, that trade is a good one. See more client results →

How We Work

Our Process

Five phases, in this order, because each one depends on the last. Foundation before content. Content before scale.

01

Audit and Baseline

We pull your current rankings, traffic, conversions, and citation profile, then check whether AI assistants can find and correctly describe your firm at all. You get the baseline in writing so every month after this is measured against something real, not a feeling.

02

Keyword and Intent Map

We separate the terms that bring research traffic from the terms that bring paying clients, and we build the page structure around the second group. Volume is not the goal. Intent is.

03

Technical and Local Foundation

Site speed, crawlability, schema, Google Business Profile, and directory consistency. This is unglamorous work and it is the reason most competitors plateau. It happens before content, not after.

04

Content Build

Practice or service pages, location pages, and the supporting content that proves expertise to both Google and the AI assistants now answering the first question. Written by a human who understands the subject, reviewed by you before it publishes.

05

Report and Adjust

Monthly reporting on organic sessions, calls, form fills, and where you actually rank, plus a strategy call. If something is not working, you hear it from us before you notice it yourself.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SEC Marketing Rule allow RIAs to advertise at all?

Yes. The 2021 rule modernized what advisers may do and permits testimonials and endorsements subject to disclosure, oversight, and other conditions. It also carries specific requirements around performance presentation and prohibits certain untrue or unsubstantiated statements. The rule is a set of conditions, not a prohibition. We build to those conditions. Your CCO and your counsel make the final call.

Can we use client testimonials or online reviews?

Under the current rule, testimonials and endorsements are permitted with required disclosures and oversight, and compensated arrangements carry additional conditions. Many firms still decide the operational burden is not worth it, particularly around third-party review platforms they cannot control. We help you decide deliberately rather than discovering exposure after the fact.

How is this different from a generic marketing agency?

A generic agency will write you a testimonial-heavy site and a results-driven headline, and your compliance officer will reject all of it. Rebuilding after rejection is where most RIA marketing budgets die. We start on the right side of the rule.

Why does AI search matter for a referral-based practice?

Because referred prospects verify you online before they call, and increasingly they do that verification by asking an assistant. If your firm cannot be found and described accurately, a warm referral cools. AI visibility protects the referral pipeline you already have, before it produces anything new.

Do you provide compliance or legal advice?

No. We are a marketing agency. We build with the rule in view and flag risk, and your chief compliance officer and counsel retain final authority over everything published.

Do you require a long-term contract?

No. Month to month, with a requested 90 day window. Positioning and content work compounds, and 90 days is the minimum honest window to judge it.
