ChatGPT advertising guide for businesses: account, ads, build, track.

How to Advertise on ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Guide for Businesses in 2026

For years, businesses have asked the same question: Can I advertise on ChatGPT?

The answer is now yes.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads and a self-service Ads Manager that allows businesses to create campaigns, choose budgets and objectives, build ads, track performance, and optimize campaigns much like they already do in Google Ads and Meta Ads.

But ChatGPT advertising is not just Google Search with a different logo.

The biggest difference is how ChatGPT understands intent.

Someone may search Google for:

plumber Myrtle Beach

But they might ask ChatGPT:

I have a vacation rental in Myrtle Beach and the water heater keeps shutting off. Should I repair it or replace it, and who handles this kind of thing locally?

That is a completely different advertising environment.

Instead of seeing a handful of keywords, ChatGPT has context.

That is what makes this worth paying attention to.

As of September 2026, ChatGPT ads can appear below ChatGPT responses and are clearly separated from the answer itself. OpenAI says ad selection can consider the intent and context of the current conversation, the advertiser’s landing page, ad copy, creative and advertiser-provided context hints.

Here is how to get started.

Step 1: Make Sure Your Business Is Eligible for ChatGPT Ads

Start here because not every category is treated the same.

OpenAI currently supports a range of consumer categories, including local services, travel and experiences, household and lifestyle products, digital products and education. Certain categories such as legal, financial and healthcare advertising may require additional approval and are being rolled out more carefully.

For most local service businesses, retailers, tourism companies, educational businesses and many professional services firms, ChatGPT Ads are already worth investigating.

If you work in a regulated industry, do not assume that because you advertise on Google you can automatically run the same thing on ChatGPT.

Check the policy first.

Step 2: Create Your OpenAI Ads Manager Account

Go to OpenAI Ads Manager and create an advertiser account.

You can sign in using an existing OpenAI account associated with your business email or create a new one.

From there, complete your advertiser information.

OpenAI currently requires advertisers to complete account onboarding and verification, add account information, set up billing and add the business logo that will appear with the ad. Ads will not deliver until the required setup is complete.

Do this before you start worrying about headlines.

A brilliant ad sitting inside an unverified account generates exactly zero leads.

Step 3: Set Up Conversion Tracking Before You Spend Money

This is the boring part.

It is also the part that separates actual marketing from buying traffic and hoping.

Decide what a successful ChatGPT visitor should do.

For a local service business, that might be:

Call the business. Book an appointment. Submit a quote request. Schedule a consultation. Make a purchase.

OpenAI Ads Manager currently reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions when conversion measurement has been configured. Advertisers can also add UTM parameters to their landing page URLs so ChatGPT traffic can be identified inside tools such as Google Analytics.

We would set this up before the first campaign launches.

Do not wait three weeks and then ask where the leads came from.

Step 4: Choose the Right ChatGPT Ad Objective

ChatGPT Ads currently supports three primary buying approaches:

ObjectiveWhat You Are BuyingBest Use
CPMImpressionsBrand awareness and reach
CPCClicksWebsite traffic and consideration
oCPCConversion-optimized clicksLeads, purchases and downstream actions

OpenAI’s conversion-optimized CPC campaigns still charge advertisers per valid click, but the system optimizes toward clicks more likely to produce the conversion event you selected.

For most Flyt Creative clients, I would not begin with pure reach.

If you run a plumbing company, dental office, school, law firm, tour company or another lead-driven business, we care about what happened after somebody saw the ad.

A click is better than an impression.

A booked customer is better than either.

Step 5: Choose Your Budget and Geography

ChatGPT Ads supports geographic targeting.

In the United States, OpenAI currently supports options including states, DMAs and ZIP codes where available. That makes the platform much more useful for local businesses than it was during the earliest testing stages.

As of September 2026, the published U.S. campaign minimum is $25 per day.

For CPC campaigns, OpenAI currently recommends starting with a maximum bid of approximately $3 to $5 per click, although actual costs and delivery will vary by competition and relevance.

Do not take that $3–$5 figure as some magical ChatGPT average.

It isn’t.

Treat ChatGPT Ads the same way we treat a new Google Ads campaign: establish the economics of the business first.

If a new customer is worth $4,000, you can tolerate a very different cost per lead than a business making $40 from a sale.

Step 6: Build Ad Groups Around Intent, Not Just Keywords

This may be the most important difference between ChatGPT Ads and traditional search advertising.

ChatGPT uses context hints at the ad-group level.

Context hints tell the system the types of conversations, needs, problems and situations where your offering may be helpful.

They are not exact-match keywords.

OpenAI specifically says context hints do not guarantee that an ad will appear when somebody uses a particular phrase. Instead, they help the system understand broader conversational intent.

Imagine we were advertising an HVAC company.

Instead of building one giant ad group called:

HVAC

we might separate the intent into things like:

Emergency AC problems

People discussing an air conditioner that suddenly stopped cooling, strange noises, leaking systems or an unusually hot house.

AC replacement

People comparing repair versus replacement, asking how long HVAC systems last or researching new systems.

Vacation rental HVAC

Property owners asking about maintaining HVAC systems in rental properties.

Those are not simply keyword groups.

They are problem groups.

That is where advertising is heading.

Step 7: Create Ads That Actually Answer the Situation

A ChatGPT ad can include the advertiser name, favicon or logo, title, description, landing page and image creative.

OpenAI recommends clear, specific and benefit-focused advertising rather than vague promotional language. It also recommends using multiple genuinely different creative variations so the system has more opportunities to match an ad with a relevant conversation.

In other words:

Weak ad:

We’re the best HVAC company. Call today!

Better ad:

AC Not Cooling?
Local HVAC repair with same-day appointments available.

The second one tells me what you solve.

That matters much more inside a conversation.

For bulk-created ads, OpenAI currently recommends titles around 16–24 characters, with a 50-character maximum, and descriptions around 32–48 characters, with a 100-character maximum. Square JPG or PNG images can be used, up to 1200 × 1200 pixels.

Step 8: Send the Click Somewhere Worth Going

Do not send every ChatGPT ad to your homepage.

This is one of the biggest mistakes advertisers still make in Google Ads, and there is no reason to drag it into a new platform.

If the conversation is about replacing an HVAC system, send that visitor to the HVAC replacement page.

If the ad is about SAT tutoring, send them to the SAT tutoring page.

If the ad is about dolphin tours, send them to the dolphin tour booking page.

The ad, landing page and user problem should say the same thing.

That helps people convert.

It also gives the advertising system clearer information about what your business actually offers.

Step 9: Submit the Campaign for Review

Once the campaign, ad groups and creatives are complete, turn the campaign active and submit it.

Campaigns may not serve immediately.

OpenAI reviews advertiser accounts and ad creative, and ads can stop serving when verification, billing or policy issues need attention.

If an ad is not serving, diagnose the reason before immediately raising the bid.

Sometimes the problem isn’t money.

Step 10: Optimize for Business Results, Not ChatGPT Traffic

This part is exactly the same as every other advertising platform.

Traffic is not the goal.

The business outcome is.

Watch:

Cost per click. Conversion rate. Cost per lead. Lead quality. Booked appointments. Sales. Revenue.

And then compare those numbers with Google and Meta.

If ChatGPT sends 50 visitors and six become customers while another channel sends 400 visitors and four become customers, the smaller traffic source might be considerably more valuable.

Measure what the advertising produced.

Not what looked impressive on the dashboard.

Does ChatGPT Advertising Replace SEO or AEO?

No.

And this distinction is important.

ChatGPT ads are paid placements. OpenAI states that advertisements are separate from ChatGPT’s answers and advertisers cannot pay to influence, shape or rank inside the actual answer.

That means there are now two different ways a business can gain visibility around ChatGPT:

Paid ChatGPT advertising gives you sponsored visibility.

AI Search Optimization / AEO increases the chances that AI systems understand, trust, cite or recommend your business organically.

Smart businesses should understand both.

Paying for an ad does not make ChatGPT recommend your business.

And ranking organically in an AI response does not mean you bought an ad.

Two different systems. Two different strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT Ads

Can small businesses advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI now offers self-service advertising through Ads Manager in supported markets, making ChatGPT advertising accessible beyond major national brands.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

There is no single fixed cost. Advertisers can buy CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized CPC campaigns. As of September 2026, OpenAI recommends a starting maximum CPC bid of roughly $3–$5 for CPC campaigns, and the U.S. daily campaign minimum is currently $25.

Does ChatGPT Ads use keywords?

Not in the traditional Google Ads sense. Advertisers can provide context hints describing the conversations and situations where an offering is useful. They guide ad matching but are not exact-match keyword targeting.

Where do ChatGPT ads appear?

Ads can appear below ChatGPT responses and are clearly labeled and separated from the answer.

Can advertisers see someone’s ChatGPT conversation?

No. OpenAI says advertisers do not receive users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers receive advertising performance information rather than access to the conversation itself.

Is ChatGPT Advertising Worth Testing?

For the right business, yes.

But this is not where I would throw your entire advertising budget because someone announced that AI is the future.

The better move is simpler.

Build the tracking correctly. Start with a defined customer problem. Create tight ad groups around conversational intent. Send traffic to a highly relevant page. Give the campaign enough budget to produce meaningful data.

Then see what happened.

That is how you test a new advertising channel without turning your marketing budget into tuition.
