Your customers still Google you. But more of them now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity first. They type “Who’s the best roofer near me?” and get one answer with three names in it.
Is your business one of those names?
That question is what GEO is all about.
What SEO and GEO mean
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your website rank in Google and Bing results. The goal is a click.
GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your business get mentioned inside AI-generated answers. The goal is a recommendation. You may also see it called AEO or AI search optimization. Same idea, different acronym. Marketing does love an acronym.
The good news: it’s mostly the same work
This isn’t a whole new marketing budget. Google’s own guidance on AI search describes this work as still SEO. Bing says SEO fundamentals are what make you eligible to show up in its AI experiences.
Both reward the same things. Clear answers to real questions. Accurate, current information. Pages that are organized and easy to scan. Proof that you are who you say you are.
Where they’re different
Google ranks pages. AI tools build answers. They pull facts from your site, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, directories, and anywhere else your name shows up. Then they decide whether to trust you enough to name you.
That means three things matter more than they used to:
Consistency. If your hours say one thing on Google and another on Yelp, AI tools get confused. Confused tools skip you.
Quotable content. AI pulls short, direct answers. A page that makes readers dig for the point is a page AI passes over.
Outside proof. Reviews, mentions, and listings carry weight. What others say about you counts more than what you say about yourself.
Why this matters now
If your business doesn’t show up in AI answers, some customers will never find you, even if you rank well on Google. Clicks get harder to measure when the answer appears right on the screen. But being the name in that answer is still visibility. It still turns into calls.
The businesses getting named aren’t always the biggest. They’re the ones with clean, consistent, clearly written information.
Where to start
Try a simple test. Ask ChatGPT, “Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?” See who it names. Then ask about your business by name and check whether the details are right.
That five-minute test tells you a lot.
From there, the work comes down to six steps:
- Check where you stand.
- Lock down your business facts.
- Make your pages easy to quote.
- Clean up the technical basics.
- Build proof beyond your own site.
- Track it monthly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO helps your website rank in search results like Google and Bing. GEO helps your business get mentioned inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. SEO earns clicks. GEO earns recommendations.
Do I need to pay for GEO separately from SEO?
Usually not. Most of what helps you show up in AI answers is solid SEO: accurate business information, clear service pages, good reviews, and a site search engines can read. GEO adds a few extra checks, like making sure your answers are easy to quote and your details match everywhere.
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Ask it. Type “Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?” into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and note who they name. Then ask about your business by name to see if the details are correct. Repeat monthly and compare.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
It varies. AI tools refresh their information on different schedules, and some lean on search results that change daily. Fixing inconsistent business information and thin service pages is the fastest place to start.
Does my Google Business Profile matter for AI search?
Yes. AI tools pull business details, categories, hours, and reviews from sources like your Google Business Profile. A complete, accurate profile is one of the simplest ways to help AI tools describe you correctly.
