Businesses now have a new place to spend advertising money.
Just what everyone needed.
Alongside Google and Meta, advertisers can now buy ads inside ChatGPT.
The immediate temptation is to ask which platform is best.
That is probably the wrong question.
Google, Meta and ChatGPT catch customers at different moments.
Google is strongest when someone is actively searching.
Meta is strongest when you need to create or shape demand while people scroll.
ChatGPT creates an entirely new opportunity: reaching someone while they are working through a decision.
That difference matters.
The Short Answer
For most local businesses, we would not replace Google Ads with ChatGPT Ads.
We would build a mix.
Google captures demand.
Meta creates and reinforces demand.
ChatGPT enters the conversation while someone is evaluating what to do.
That is a very different job.
ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads vs. Meta Ads
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
| Primary behavior | Asking, comparing, deciding | Searching | Scrolling, watching, discovering |
| Intent | Conversational/contextual | Search intent | Behavioral/predictive |
| Strongest asset | Relevance to the problem | Search + landing page | Creative |
| Best fit | Considered purchases and services | Existing demand | Demand generation and remarketing |
| Targeting direction | Context hints + AI relevance | Keywords + AI intent signals | AI audience prediction |
| Biggest challenge | Newer platform, less history | Competition and cost | Constant creative demand |
The platforms are already becoming more alike in one important way.
All three are becoming more dependent on AI.
ChatGPT uses conversation context.
Google’s AI Max can expand beyond traditional keywords using AI-powered search term matching, asset optimization and landing-page understanding. Google is also building advertising directly into conversational AI Search experiences.
Meta continues to put more ad selection, creative generation and optimization into its AI systems, including its next-generation ads ranking models and Advantage tools.
Manual targeting is not disappearing tomorrow.
But the direction is obvious.
Where Google Ads Still Wins
If someone’s pipes burst at 1:30 in the morning and they type:
emergency plumber near me
Google is hard to beat.
The demand already exists.
The customer has identified the problem.
They are actively looking for somebody to fix it.
Search ads are built for that moment.
Google also has an enormous advertising ecosystem spanning Search, Maps, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Shopping. Performance Max alone can access Google’s inventory across multiple channels and optimize toward conversion goals using Google AI.
For many local service businesses, Google should still be the foundation of paid acquisition.
Especially when people already search for what you sell.
Where Meta Ads Still Wins
Nobody wakes up and Googles:
beautiful pool I didn’t know I desperately needed until 45 seconds ago
But they absolutely see one on Instagram.
That is Meta’s strength.
Facebook and Instagram are exceptionally good at interrupting passive behavior with something interesting enough to create demand.
Pools.
Restaurants.
Weddings.
Travel.
Home improvement.
Beauty.
Events.
Products.
Anything where seeing the thing can make someone want the thing.
Meta’s AI systems increasingly handle audience selection and delivery, while Advantage+ creative tools help create and adapt assets across placements. Meta says its newer ads ranking systems are using increasingly sophisticated AI models to predict which ads people are likely to find relevant.
But Meta still has a price of admission:
You need creative.
And you need new creative regularly.
A mediocre ad shown to a perfectly targeted audience is still a mediocre ad.
Where ChatGPT Ads Are Different
ChatGPT sits somewhere between search and discovery.
Someone may not be searching for a specific company.
They may not even know exactly what solution they need yet.
They are asking questions.
Comparing options.
Trying to understand tradeoffs.
Planning something.
That means the advertiser may enter the picture before a traditional search happens.
Imagine someone asks:
We’re taking six people to Myrtle Beach in October. We have two teenagers and my mother can’t walk very far. What are some activities everyone can do?
That conversation has enormously more context than:
Myrtle Beach activities
Or:
Myrtle Beach attractions
For an advertiser selling an appropriate experience, that context can be extremely valuable.
OpenAI’s ad system uses multiple relevance signals including conversational intent, landing-page content, ad copy and advertiser-supplied context hints.
That is why ChatGPT advertising deserves its own strategy.
Copying your Google headlines into ChatGPT Ads and calling it done misses the point.
Which Platform Should a Local Business Start With?
If people already search Google every day for the exact service you offer, I would usually start with Google.
Plumber.
Dentist.
Personal injury attorney.
HVAC company.
Roofing company.
Tutor.
Those businesses benefit from capturing existing intent.
Once that channel is working, ChatGPT becomes an interesting additional layer because customers increasingly ask AI systems questions before or instead of conducting a traditional search.
Meta becomes especially valuable when your service benefits from visuals, storytelling, repetition or creating awareness before someone has decided to buy.
The right answer is not allegiance to a platform.
It is understanding where the customer is in the decision.
When I Would Test ChatGPT Ads First
There are categories where conversational research is particularly interesting.
Travel planning.
Education.
Software.
Home projects.
Professional services.
Complex purchases.
Products people compare.
Services where people ask, “What should I do?” before they ask, “Who should I hire?”
That is the opportunity.
ChatGPT is not merely catching a query.
It may be present while the person forms the query they will eventually search.
The Mistake Businesses Are Going to Make
There will be plenty.
But the first one is already predictable.
Businesses are going to treat ChatGPT Ads as either the death of Google or the next shiny thing that solves everything.
Neither is true.
Google has enormous scale and mature commercial intent.
Meta has enormous reach and one of the most sophisticated ad-delivery systems ever built.
ChatGPT has something neither platform historically had in quite the same way:
the actual conversation surrounding the decision.
That does not make it universally better.
It makes it different.
A Better Paid Media Strategy for 2026
Think about your advertising around the customer journey instead of the platform.
Use Google to capture demand.
Use Meta to create, reinforce and retarget demand.
Use ChatGPT to participate in high-context consideration moments.
Then measure all three against the same thing:
Qualified leads.
Booked work.
Sales.
Revenue.
Not clicks.
Not impressions.
Not whichever dashboard happens to look happiest that month.
That is the number that matters.
